10:00 AM Challenging design and construction aspects of artificial islands on soft soils: a case study of design and back-analysis with monitoring data

ARTELIA designed various artificial islands and embankments of which some were to be constructed on tick soft clay layers. Treatment of native compressible (soft clay) foundation soils was considered necessary to mitigate possible negative influence on the overlying embankments and earth fills and to meet the project serviceability (settlement) requirements. Staged construction and preloading combined with Prefabricated Vertical Drains installed from a platform was selected as the ground improvement/treatment method. The behavior of the soft clays was designed by using numerical models and were later verified based on extensive monitoring on site
